Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Inc. programs have helped children overcome demonstrated limitations in their cognitive, communication, and personal and social adjustment skills. At the heart of the program are individual and group expressive arts therapy and grief counseling. Their comprehensive programs emphasize creative modalities – especially art, music, poetry, dance, drama, and discussion, as well as structured play, to help them better understand their experiences and losses, balancing HIV/AIDS with the brighter sides of life. PAHC provides evening multicultural programs designed around educational, cultural, social and recreational enrichment services, a mentor program, and parental/caregiver support.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Inc is the only organization in the DC area devoted exclusively to vital support services for children living with HIV/AIDS. PAHCs comprehensive range of psychosocial services is designed in response to the complex needs and wishes of the whole child. They are especially focused on supporting young persons orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS. The children who have priority for enrollment are those with an imminent or recent AIDS-related loss.

Individual and Group Therapy

Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Inc. therapists provide weekly services for children, parents, and caregivers. PAHC clinical goals include fostering self-awareness and healthy relationships, reducing anxiety, aiding reality orientation, building trust and integrity, cultivating a sense of belonging and self-esteem, finding responsible alternatives to maladaptive and risky behaviors, reconciling emotional conflicts, developing versatile problem-solving strategies and consequential thinking, and promoting mastery and resilience.

Tutoring and Educational Enrichment

PAHC provides educational and cultural enrichment programming that includes homework support, tutoring, college counseling and application assistance, and activities in wide ranging subject areas. Throughout all oh their learning activities PAHC stresses healthy study skills and basic discipline toward scholastic tasks. PAHC strives to help our clients advance academically and cultivate a love of learning and curiosity about new subjects, often utilizing our fully-equipped computer lab.

Youth Space

Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care is proud to be a national leader in the development and implementation of innovative programs and services to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. To this end, PAHC is proud to be the only Federally funded urban summer day camp for children and young adults ages 12-18 who are infected and affected by HIV/AIIDS. This initiative – which will completed its fifth camping season in August 2008 – is designed to serve 30 youth over two month-long summer day camp sessions. The goal of this project is to provide the life, decision-making, and communication skills needed for improved social competence, resiliency and satisfaction in anticipation of purposeful and meaningful adult lives.

Also, PAHC became a DOES worksite in 2008 to give youth real-life work experience that will benefit them in the future.

Supporting Families

PAHC provides the parents and caregivers with individual and family counseling, HIV/AIDS disclosure guidance, parenting and behavior management instruction, crisis intervention, and support for the planning of life transitions. The goal is to provide parents and caregivers with a respite from their parenting responsibilities while the children are with participating in Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care programming.

MTA Goals

Goal 1: To provide innovative, science-based, effective education on HIV prevention, care, and related issues.

HIV Testing Information

Metro TeenAIDS offers testing that is: Quick, Free, Painless and Confidential. Metro TeenAIDS uses the OraQuick Advance test. It only takes 20 minutes and results are received right here at the office. The testing sessions includes a pre and post test counseling session. In the session, one of our Care Advocates will work with you to determine your risk for HIV. We also offer free testing for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. This testing requires two weeks for results. And treatment is offered at the STD Clinic at the DC General Health campus for free.

All testing is offered Monday and Friday upon appointment (from 10:30a-6p). Testing is offered Tuesday-Thursday from 12p-8p. Just ask for Arnita, Courtney, or one of our Care Advocates.

Counseling and Support

The counselors and staff members give youth the support they need to make informed decisions about their health, sexual activity, drug and alcohol use/abuse, anger management and violence prevention through individual counseling and weekly support groups..

Youth Advocacy Internship
The Youth Advocacy Interns lead workshops around the region training their peers, school teachers, and administrators to educate about LGBTQ youth issues and promote acceptance. This program promotes acceptance and understanding in schools around the region while promoting positive leadership development and public speaking skills for the youth intern participants.

HIV Testing, Counseling and Referral
SMYAL provides free HIV testing, counseling and referral for youth. The Health Program Manager connects youth who test positive for HIV to the care they need through a partnership with Children’s National Medical Center and provides limited case management. They also provide free testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Chat it Up!
This group provides an outlet for youth to learn about current events and share their opinions, for discussion about topics such as race, gender, politics, sex, LGBT rights, violence, and other issues that apply to youth.

Brotherhood University
The CDC-funded Brotherhood University program uses the proven effective DEBI (Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Intervention) “Many Men, Many Voices” to provide young gay and bisexual men of color with HIV prevention education.

Recreational Night
Providing safe social activities for LGBTQ youth to be themselves is an integral part to our work. Every Friday, SMYAL opens their Youth Center for regular social activities such as dances, movie nights, and games nights. They also work with community partners to hold large-scale events throughout the region.

The Non Medical Case Management Program provides support thru referral to related services including, HIV/AIDS Intervention/Prevention services, Crisis Intervention, Primary Medical, HIV/AIDS support Groups, Dental and Pharmacy assistance, Mental health, Transportation, Substance Abuse treatment, HIV testing, Housing assistance, Emergency assistance, and Medical Case Management.

 The Outreach Prevention and referral program compliments the Case Management Program by providing individual, group, and institutional outreach services utilizing research based HIV intervention/prevention models.  Street outreach workers have a strong presence in high risk areas including homeless shelters, low income communities, schools, health and social services institutions.

Emergency Assistance Food Pantry is provided for our HIV/AIDS clients as well as the disenfranchised populations that we serve when available.

Whitman-Walker Clinic’s Max Robinson Center, named after the nation’s first African-American network news anchor, Max Robinson, who died of AIDS in 1988, has been providing HIV/AIDS services for clients living in southeast D.C. since 1992. MRC provides a wide range of services to the community east of the Anacostia River in a culturally competent and sensitive manner. MRC serves an area that traditionally has been underserved and faces tremendous challenges when it comes to primary health care and HIV/AIDS services.

Free anonymous and confidential HIV testing is available at the following times:

Primary Medical Care
Primary medical care, including regular check ups, urgent care for illness for current patients, testing for sexually transmitted infections and pediatric care is available at Max Robinson Center.

Dental Services
MRC provides dental care to the uninsured or underinsured diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Day Treatment
Day treatment creates a setting for holistic health care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Nutritional assessment and counseling, nursing care, support and psychotherapy groups and activities in art, music, and movement therapy are among the services offered to maintain a focus on the whole person in the healing process.

Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Services
Professionally led psychotherapy groups, psychiatric evaluation, peer facilitated support  groups, individual and couples counseling, addiction treatment counseling and referral and assistance for HIV-related mental health issues are available through this program

SMART services include street and community outreach, anonymous and confidential HIV counseling and testing, prevention workshops, individual HIV risk reduction counseling, peer educator training and a speaker’s bureau. Appointments are not necessary for HIV testing.

The SMART program is located at the Holy Redeemer Metropolitan Community Church at 4907 Niagara Rd., Suite 102, in College Park, MD, every Wednesday from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Testing is also available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am-5:00 pm and Wednesdays from 9:00 am-12:00 pm at the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Dennis Avenue Health Center, 2000 Dennis Avenue, Silver Spring.
